Instagram’s live feature is a bit of a mix between its Stories functionality (which is just like Snapchat) and Facebook Live, in that the video disappears after it’s over, but during the stream, users can comment on and like the video, which is displayed in real time to the user hosting the live feed.
To start your own live video, follow these steps:
- Tap in the top left of the screen or swipe right from anywhere in Feed.
- Tap Live at the bottom of the screen, then scroll left to “Live” instead of “Normal” and tap Start Live Video. Your followers may be notified when you start a live video.
- The number of viewers appears in the top right of the screen, and comments appear at the bottom. Tap Comment to add a comment, and tap and hold a comment to pin it to the top so that viewers can see it more easily.
- To turn comments off, tap then select Turn Off Commenting. Keep in mind that any keyword filters you’ve turned on will also apply to comments on your live video.
- When you’re done, tap End in the top right then tap to confirm.
Keep in mind that you may not be able to share a live video if your account was recently created, and that once a live video has ended, it’s no longer visible on Instagram.
On the other side of things, when someone you follow shares their own live video, their profile picture will appear at the top of the Feed with a colorful ring around it and the word Live. If you have post notifications enabled, you’ll also receive a notification as well once their video begins streaming. Tap their profile picture to view their live video.
While viewing someone’s live video, you can tap Comment at the bottom of the screen to leave a comment, and to like their video. Anyone who’s viewing the video can see when you like or comment as a real time stream. You can also tap the screen to hide comments and likes. Keep in mind that when you start viewing a live video, the person sharing and anyone else who’s viewing may be able to see that you’ve joined.
@garyvee posted a live stream on Monday to show us all how it works, and I’m anxious to try it out myself.. Here are a few screenshots of how the real time, live commenting and liking shows up on the feed:
One thing to note is that you can’t share the live video in any way, so it will only be shown within Instagram during the time that it’s actually live, and there’s no way to pass along the stream. And once it’s done, it’ll show you the following screen:
The other cool feature that differentiates Instagram from Snapchat’s live-streaming functionality is their “Discovery” section, which allows users to browse through other live videos currently being broadcasted by users they don’t necessarily follow. So it brings up a lot of additional opportunities for users to find new accounts to follow and new live feeds to watch that they may not have found otherwise.
If you’re an Instagram user, what do you think? Do you think it’s just another space to add live content that might not get consumed, or do you see a benefit in this social platform enhancement? As video was predicted in HubSpot’s State of Inbound report for 2016, we think there may be a lot of potential here, but we’d love to hear some opinions in the comments below!
