Imgur is a thriving community where people share their own images and albums, and its integration with Reddit ensures a unique and easy way to advertise and generate tons of new traffic…all for free. Every month, images on Imgur are viewed and shared billions of times, and the most viral are displayed at the very top of the Imgur home page, so are even more visible and accessible for anyone visiting the site.
Anyone can sign up for an account, and anyone can create an album and share their images and memes for free across the site (which is currently one of the top 50 largest websites in the world). In fact, we created a user account a few weeks ago, and posted one of our own albums, to test out the process. Within 2 days, this album had been viewed over 400 times without any effort on our part…besides making the post public.
This is pretty great proof that shows just how valuable high-quality images and an account on Imgur can be. There are so many opportunities for creating shareable content and building your brand exposure, that you should take start taking advantage, right away. Here’s how you can get started:
Setting Up Your Account
A user account isn’t necessarily required to upload images to Imgur, but it does have some additional benefits that make it worthwhile. A user account not only gives you access to track, manage and edit all of your uploads and albums, but it also allows you to comment, like or dislike other user’s images (which you cannot do without an account).
You can register for a new account either by linking an existing social media profile, or by entering a new email address and password.
Uploading Images
You can upload photos and images to Imgur either by the standard “upload” process, to upload files from your computer, or you can drag and drop files from your computer to anywhere in the Imgur browser window.
Alternatively, you can also add images directly from the web via a URL. Simply copy the URL and paste it into the Imgur browser window. Click on the “web” button and enter the URL in the field pop-up. You can either add images individually to your gallery, or create a new album.
Once you’ve uploaded your images, make sure you “give your post a title”, as well as a title and description for each image in your album. It’s also a good idea here to add in a link to your website or landing page, so that people visiting your album can click on your link and check out your website and your business.
Submit to Community
Once you have titles and descriptions for all of your images and for your album, click on the button to “Share to Community” so that your album is publicly shared across Imgur.com. You can also access your “Share Link” here to re-share this content across your social media platforms.
Engage with that Community
Imgur users are a very active community, and the comments sections are full of responses and reactions to images, albums, GIFs and memes. This is your opportunity to really engage with that community and build brand recognition that will direct even more traffic to your Imgur albums and your website.
Create Content Quickly
Imgur is built on viral and trendy images. What is popular today may not be popular in a week, a day or even an hour from now. Users have a relatively small window of opportunity to post relevant content and hope for it to go viral.
That’s why you need to make sure you are creating that relevant content quickly, and often. Review the front page of Imgur, which will show you the most popular, trending photos of the last day, and it may direct you as to what you should be creating.

As for us, we’re going to continue playing around with our Imgur account and see if we can make some new, popular content that will generate even more views, shares and comments. We’ll continue to test and see what a spike in Imgur views means for Thai-Creations’ website traffic, and we’ll write another follow-up post in a month or so with the Google Analytics results.
In the meantime, set up your own Imgur traffic test by reviewing your Analytics data before and after your first Imgur album post. To learn how to read your pre-Imgur traffic stats, download our free guide to Google Analytics:
