Since the recent Google Algorithm update that’s become widely known as “Mobilegeddon,” people and businesses everywhere have gotten even more concerned about mobile and how their rankings will be impacted by the search engine. While mobile has been important for awhile now, there are certain mistakes you can avoid in your Mobile Marketing campaigns if you’re just getting started today or are not sure if you’re on the right track with your efforts.
Not Putting Enough Energy into your Mobile Site
First of all, make sure that your website is mobile-friendly to begin with. You want people to come to your site and be able to see it properly, no matter what type of device they are using. The most all-encompassing way to do this would be by making it responsive, so it adapts automatically to whatever device a user is on.
Not Matching Content with Mobile Messaging
Once your website is mobile-friendly, it’s good to take the next step and also cater your content with mobile users. For example, if people are out and about, they are looking for different types of content than those people sitting at their desks. You may be looking for quick information of what’s the best restaurant nearby, or how you can find that perfect gift in your neighbourhood that you forgot to pick up on the weekend. This may mean that you should provide a mobile app, or it could just mean that you have all steps of your campaign setup to be mobile-friendly, from emails to text messaging, to location-based notifications. Don’t forget who you are targeting at any given time in the campaign process.
Not Taking Privacy Seriously
People don’t want to be a part of something when they feel like it’s invading their privacy. Don’t take these concerns lightly, and make sure you always have the required permission before collecting personal information. Follow all industry regulations and best practices for your region and always use an opt-in system.
Requiring Too Much Typing Input
While screen real estate is at a premium on a laptop or desktop, it is even moreso on a small mobile device. It’s also a lot more difficult for a mobile-user to type in a lot or take specific actions, so make sure to streamline any required inputs that need to be made. Try using QR codes, or reducing the amount of information needed to fill out and submit a form or complete a call to action.
Not Delivering Optimized Content
Like any other type of campaign, you should make sure to optimize and deliver valuable content to your mobile-users. Ensure that content is mobile-friendly throughout the campaign process, whether via MMS, email, and plan your mobile campaign from the beginning. Don’t waste time setting up a campaign if you aren’t going to focus on the customer experience as it relates to your business goals!
